Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
