The Evolution of a Movement tends to be marked by distinct phases.

1. The Core Concept

A dominant personality or coaches propose an innovative concept offering a cure for disconnected individuals.

So here we are. They’re getting ready to storm the compound in Australia. Pressure is mounting. Signs of trouble appear from the sidelines. An isolated player, vulnerable, anxious, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT smeared across his chest in chicken blood, has stumbled from the field and is being led away in secrecy to a different team elsewhere.

Do you recall the early days, when optimism reigned? The era of early Bazball, of Bazball without brains.

2. Initial Adoration

Cult leaders offer a reboot, hope for a future, camaraderie, redemption together united in belief in the method.

How did it feel initially? Just men on a balcony basking in glory. Tattoos. Muscles. Jawlines. Peak performance vibes. Admittedly, England’s players will claim Bazball doesn’t actually exist, ironically as it’s denied, what did we see?

Yet it’s clear the concept. It’s the batsman attempting a move so outrageous it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of the captain at his peak, an expression conveying: focused titan, beard made of wood, natural look, truly contemporary you wouldn’t be surprised to notice and find him positioned in the field bare-chested holding a fish.

It’s the batsman still being allowed speaking publicly, appearing as a happy little woodland creature smartly dressed, expressing thoughts like we are actively deconstructing the orange. And yes, the atmosphere, initially, was entirely positive.

3. The Growth Phase

Development stage. Cohesion maintained through repetition of mantras. These ideas can appear contradictory as a test of “true belief”.

Does anyone else feel? The criticism, the outrage, the feeling of letdown post-defeat appears excessive, unwarranted. The performance was poor on the field, as is typical there. They were savaged while bowling in a short span as the bowling and captaincy fell apart, manipulated by the batsman playing aggressively but smarter, adjusting to the pitch, a man playing with a kind of light around him.

Currently, we see the criticism, the rage, the perception of the team as a failure. The opinion suggests that England don’t just need to lose, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, obliterated, defeated by the vengeful purity of Mitchell Starc’s movements, the low-fi orthodoxies of the veteran, seen enjoying achievements modestly as if receiving a rewarding prize. What will this do to them?

4. Hate Bonding

Issues emerge from failures in the plan. However, faults are ignored. It begins to thrive on anger towards critics.

In truth, half a week out the upcoming game, we have now reached an intriguing moment in the lifespan of this approach. England could quite easily win in Brisbane through aggressive play. Probably, failure may follow. In case of defeat it feels like we really might be entering the decline.

Prior to that, a couple of points worth saying about this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. There was outrage, which was helpful because everyone knows a method to show lack of cult status is if supporters react defensively denying scrutiny of the beliefs.

The developments recently are fascinating. Opposition to the style has now become the cult. We have a uniformly angry internet, critical analysts, shots of angry middle-aged supporters abroad missing out on play, similar to investors demanding recourse.

On the other hand, exists the larger scene of the host’s complex deep-seated frustration with the aggressive tourists, stating, your cherished traditions and have fostered and nurtured to distinguish yourselves from others, it’s not serious after all.

This is the core issue. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon since the sport itself is insular. Or at least, the team has long been exclusive, a circle, a private event, a closed world with a long history of ceremonial past behind it. It has long been where entry is limited. It’s the imperial sport of the nation, the early image-makers. And guess what, Britain is itself a cult, a structure of hidden ranks, a monarchy still exists.

The team have been isolated in this environment from a young age. Attempting to break free, to build a better atmosphere, they are mirroring their past, forming a new circle, an exclusive group, but now with a new team and a mentor promoting authenticity provided you conform.

Focus on the moment. Run towards the danger. However much you change, you’re always basically in the same place.
