A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the period preceding former President Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.

One account, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
